INDIANAPOLIS - Week 20 of 36 (By: Mark Aumann)

Who's Up - Biggest Gain this week:
#5 Mark Martin: 15th to 4th
New This Week :#83 Brian Vickers + #00 David Reutimann

Who's Down - Biggest Drop this week:
#47 Marcos Ambrose: 8th to 15th
Dropped Out : #17 Matt Kenseth + #16 Greg Biffle

Tony Stewart #14 CHEVY
Tony is quickly becoming as much a fixture at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Jeff Gordon #24 CHEVY
Since Jeff hosts a bowling tournament every year at Indy, it's easy for him to keep his mind out of the gutter.

Jimmie Johnson #48 CHEVY
Jimmie's going to announce plans for his 2009 charity golf tournament this weekend, including a putting contest and media golf cart roof ride-along.

Mark Martin #5 CHEVY
Everybody needs to get off Mark's case about turning 50.
Heck, if Hershel McGriff can still be competitive at 81, that means Mark can retire and unretire at least a dozen more times.

Denny Hamlin #11 TOYOTA
After Denny finished 38th with fuel pump problems at Pocono, he's posted 4 top-5 finishes in the past 5 races.

Kasey Kahne #9 DODGE
The Brickyard seems to be all or nothing for Kasey.
He's finished in the top 10 three times, and 36th and 40th in the other two races.

Kurt Busch #2 DODGE
After yet another encounter with Jimmie Johnson, Kurt has to be asking himself, "Why do we keep bumping into each other like this?"

Carl Edwards #99 FORD
Carl hasn't had the chance to break out the backflip after a Cup win this season.
Perhaps adding a degree of difficulty -- like kissing the bricks -- might impress the judges.
That or switching signature move coaches.

Ryan Newman #39 CHEVY
Purdue's band loves to show off its Big Bass Drum at Indy every May.
Boilermaker alum Ryan would like nothing more than to beat the competition the same way Sunday.

Juan Montoya #42 CHEVY
Juan's supposedly carrying a paint scheme that matches his Indy 500-winning car.
It's a good thing it's not the Formula One paint scheme, or he might be tempted to take off backwards through the infield.

Brian Vickers #83 TOYOTA
Red Bull may give you wings, but it also apparently makes for a very loose car in the closing laps, as Brian found out at Chicagoland.

Kyle Busch #18 TOYOTA
Smashing a perfectly good guitar: Kyle has one top-10 and an average finish of 18.5 in 6 Cup races since his Nashville trophy bash.

David Reutimann #00 TOYOTA
Owner Michael Waltrip recently called David the backbone of his entire organization.
Maybe that night school chiropractic degree program is finally paying off.

Joey Logano #20 TOYOTA
After Joey wound up spinning Sam Hornish Jr., I'm guessing he'll probably have to wait more than six weeks for that Mobil 1 rebate check.

Marcos Ambrose #47 TOYOTA
Hey, if Mark Webber can hoist the Australian flag by winning the German Grand Prix, the least Marcos can do is second the motion at Indy this weekend.

Sprint Cup Power Rankings - NASCAR Power Rankings - ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/powerranking
2009 Power Rankings: Brickyard

New this week
Dale Earnhardt Jr. #88 CHEVY

Dropped out
Jamie McMurray. #26 FORD

Biggest movers
#39 Ryan Newman moves up 3 spots from 9`th to 6`th,
#83 Brian Vickers moves from 17th to 14th.

Biggest losers
#17 Matt Kenseth falls 4 spots from 7`th to 11`th,
#18 Kyle Busch falls from 8`th to 12`th.

Also considered
A.J. Allmendinger #44 DODGE
Kevin Harvick #29 CHEVY

2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Power Rankings - Week 21

#14 Tony Stewart = 15 TOP 10s

Evidence No. 234 that Tony Stewart is a changed man: When Kyle Busch kept saying the Daytona wreck was Stewart's fault, Smoke never even considered rearranging Shrub's face with a torque wrench.

#24 Jeff Gordon = 13 TOP 10s

So you think Four-Time lost his cajones? Did you see the closing laps at Chicagoland? By the way, he's the all-time Brickyard leader in wins, poles, top-5s, top-10s, laps led, money won and average finish.

#48 Jimmie Johnson = 13 TOP 10s

All that stuff we just said about how good Jeff Gordon has been at Indy during his career -- JJ has been even better over the past 3 years, even when his tires were popping like balloons in a pizza oven.

#11 Denny Hamlin = 8 TOP 10s

Lost amid all the talk about his bad luck and his 2 high-profile teammates, Hambone has gotten on a roll with 4 top-5s in 5 races and a jump from 12th to 5`th in points.

#2 Kurt Busch = 10 TOP 10s

Busch showed his old teeth after Chicago when he said he'd "lost respect" for Jimmie Johnson. I can't go to Indy without remembering Busch declaring Jimmy Spencer a "decrepit old has-been."

#39 Ryan Newman = 9 TOP 10s

In 8 previous trips to IMS, this Indiana native has never started lower than 8`h but has finished inside the top 10 only once. Do what?

#99 Carl Edwards = 9 TOP 10s

King Carl seemed destined for his 6`th top-10 in 8 weeks but got shuffled back during the crazy wave of restarts. He was the runner-up at the Brickyard 400 presented by Badyear Tires one year ago.

#42 Juan Pablo Montoya = 9 TOP 10s

I can't believe all the confused e-mails I got from last week's JPM reference to the theme song from "The Jeffersons." Hey, we're moving on up.

#5 Mark Martin = 9 TOP 10s

While the young whippersnappers keep whining about double-file restarts, NASCAR's grand old man keeps whipping their snappy little butts.

#9 Kasey Kahne = 7 TOP 10s

Kahne and Jeff Gordon looked like they were running an old USAC dirt race during the closing laps at Chicago. Between Gordon's hair and Kahne's blue eyes, they also looked good doing it.

#17 Matt Kenseth = 7 TOP 10s

The numbers said Matty K was due for a great Chicago finish. The sleep deprivation resulting from having a new baby just a few days before the green flag made that math useless.

#18 Kyle Busch = 6 TOP 10s

It's time to start preparing ourselves for the fact that Shrub might miss the Chase. Wait, why is everyone smiling?

#47 Marcos Ambrose = 5 TOP 10s

Drivers from 10 nations have won the Indianapolis 500.
Drivers from four nations have won at Indy in the U.S. GP.
No one from Australia has won a race at IMS. Just sayin'.

#83 Brian Vickers = 8 TOP 10s

Pssst. Red Bull execs are in Europe trying to convince the boss to bail on Toyota and do a deal with Hendrick Motorsports for 2010. Hey, remind me, what team was it Vickers used to drive for?

#16 Greg Biffle = 8 TOP 10s

Show of hands: Who among you really truly believes in The Biff as a Chase contender? Mrs. Biffle, put your hand down.

#33 Clint Bowyer = 7 TOP 10s

In 3 trips to the Brickyard, the Pride of Emporia, Kan., has finished fourth, 13th and 19th.
To quote "Planes, Trains and Automobiles":
"You're going the wrong way!"

#00 David Reutimann = 5 TOP 10s

Reut's Chase hopes are fading. He has a new teammate on deck (Martin Truex Jr.) and is only slightly better at Indianapolis than Mike McDowell and Mike Wallace. Spend your off week praying, brother.

#31 Jeff Burton = 6 TOP 10s

Baby Burton has done an about-face on double-file restarts. Wanna know why? Perhaps it's his average finish of 25.5 since the rule was put in place.

#20 Joey Logano = 4 TOP 10s

If they ran Nationwide Series cars in the Cup series, he might already have 6 wins. Regardless, I still say he'll win two Cup races before the end of the season. Seriously.

#88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. = 3 TOP 10s

Poor Tony Eury Jr. All he did Thursday was speak the truth -- that Earnhardt is feeling the pressure and not having any fun -- and the 88 fans still trashed him. Then again, so did Earnhardt.

POCONO - Week 21 of 36 (By: Mark Aumann)

Who's Up - Biggest Gain this week:
#16 Greg Biffle: 16th to 6th
New This Week :#16 Greg Biffle + #17 Matt Kenseth

Who's Down - Biggest Drop this week:
#11 Danny Hamlin: 5th to 10th
Dropped Out : #18 Kyle Busch + #47 Marcos Ambrose

Tony Stewart #14 CHEVY
Want a statistical explanation as to Tony's success in 2009?
He leads all Cup drivers with 18 lead-lap finishes,
and he and teammate Ryan Newman are 1-2 in total laps completed.

Jimmie Johnson #48 CHEVY
The person who coined the phrase "respect your elders" never tried to make an outside pass for the lead in Turn 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Mark Martin #5 CHEVY
Mark on whether he was "big picture" racing in the closing laps: "You can't win if you wreck. I was driving as fast as I could without wrecking, man."

Jeff Gordon #24 CHEVY
It's all a matter of perspective. Jeff finished ninth at Indy and called it a "decent day."
That would have been a career highlight for an awful lot of other drivers in the field.

Kasey Kahne #9 DODGE
Peaking at the right time?: Kasey has 8 top-10 finishes this season,
and 6 of them have come in the last 9 races.

Greg Biffle #16 FORD
After wasting a good run at Michigan, Greg wasn't willing to make another fuelish mistake.

Brian Vickers #83 TOYOTA
Taking the Bull by the horns: Ever since that Nationwide Series
wreck with Cup teammate Scott Speed at New Hampshire,
Brian has finishes of 7`th, 7`th and 5`th.

Juan Montoya #42 CHEVY
Inconceivable: I wonder if Juan will now spend the next 20 years vowing revenge on a six-fingered NASCAR official?

Carl Edwards #99 FORD
The good news: Carl made more green-flag passes at Indy than anybody other than Casey Mears.
The bad news: That's what happens when you start 41st.

Denny Hamlin #11 TOYOTA
Denny desperately needs the Pocono magic that earned him 2 wins and 5 top-10s in his first 5 visits,
and not the one that's caused him to finish 23rd and 38th in the last 2 trips.

Kurt Busch #2 DODGE
Horace Mann said education is the great equalizer.
Kurt and his crew would like Horace to explain why that tire equalized and put him a lap down.

David Reutimann #00 TOYOTA
The good news: David now has 6 top-10 finishes this season.
The bad news: David's average finish in the next race after a top-10 finish this season is 26.2.

Ryan Newman #39 CHEVY
Ryan will make an appearance at the Lyons Fire Company's annual Racefest in Pennsylvania on Thursday.
I guess they invited him because they heard he was heavily involved with Smoke.

Matt Kenseth #17 FORD
With Matt announcing he's going from DeWalt to Crown Royal in 2010,
I heard one punster call it an inherently whisky move.

Joey Logano #20 TOYOTA
Joey has more wins (1) and top-10 finishes after 20 races than
Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray and Martin Truex Jr.

WATKINS GLEN - Week 22 of 36 (By: Mark Aumann)

Who's Up - Biggest Gain this week:
#11 Danny Hamlin: 10`th to 3`rd
New This Week :#33 Clint Bowyer + #77 Sam Hornish Jr.

Who's Down - Biggest Drop this week:
#16 Greg Biffle: 6`th to 12`th
Dropped Out : #00 David Reutimann + #20 Joey Logano

Tony Stewart #14 CHEVY
After losing his Swagger on the first hot lap of practice Saturday, it was good to see Tony regain a bit of it in Monday's race.

Jimmie Johnson #48 CHEVY
Following that amazing series of circumstances, I'm surprised that Hollywood isn't already planning
"The Jimmie Johnson Story: All Lucky Dogs Go To Heaven."

Denny Hamlin #11 TOYOTA
Denny drove that race with emotion and intensity, and he made it obvious he wasn't about to let somebody else's dream (machine) stand in his way.

Mark Martin #5 CHEVY
They were making a big deal on television out of the fact that Mark's never won at Pocono. So what?
If he wins the championship, he'll have enough money to buy the place.

Jeff Gordon #24 CHEVY
"It was just nuts. I saw so many guys rubbing, banging, smokin' sideways, three-wide, four-wide, and I was right in the middle of it."
I'm not sure whether Jeff was describing the race or the parking lot afterwards.

Kasey Kahne #9 DODGE
Kasey's racing schedule this week:
Monday - Pocono, Wednesday - Williams Grove, Thursday - Oswego, Sunday - Watkins Glen.
What, he couldn't squeeze the Coney Island bumper cars in there somewhere?

Juan Montoya #42 CHEVY
In his post-race news conference, Juan was asked to repeat one of his answers in Spanish.
And no, it wasn't about Kasey Kahne being angry with him after the race.

Brian Vickers #83 TOYOTA
So, which Brian shows up at Watkins Glen this weekend?
The one who won the pole at Sonoma, or the one who has an average finish of 21st in 10 road-course starts?

Clint Bowyer #33 CHEVY
Signs that things haven't been going that great recently:
Somebody stopped Clint in the garage area after Monday's race and asked what he had been doing on his summer vacation.

Kurt Busch #2 DODGE
Bad karma chameleon: At Indy, Kurt needed the race to go yellow and it stayed green.
At Pocono, Kurt needed the race to stay green and it kept going yellow.

Carl Edwards #99 FORD
Carl had three goals coming into the season:
Win the championship, win at Martinsville and win a road course.
Unless they reconfigure Martinsville between now and October, this is probably Carl's best shot at goal No. 3.

Greg Biffle #16 FORD
Greg got to meet Buffalo Bills placekicker Rian Lindell this week.
Not only are they from the same hometown, but they both make a living using only their right foot.
(Just ask Sterling Marlin.)

Ryan Newman #39 CHEVY
Ryan's average finish on superspeedways: 18.5
Ryan's average finish on intermediate tracks: 17.5
Ryan's average finish on short tracks: 15.1
Ryan's average finish on road courses: 13.1

Matt Kenseth #17 FORD
In his Cup career, Matt has led a total of 5,622 laps.
Only one of those has come on a road course.

Sam Hornish Jr. #77 DODGE
Shelve the sideways nickname.
After his strong run at Pocono, a lot of new fans might be joining Sam's club.
