How can you say, I wondered, that you have no fear of a crash? ‘Look,’ he answered, ‘the first meeting I ever went o was at St Jovite, with TransAm, Formula Ford, and so on. And I thought most of the drivers were really Mickey Mouse, people with a lot of money, going slowly. Spectators always think they can do better, and I was no different. ’I never think I can hurt myself - not seriously. If you believe it can happen to you, how can you do this job? If you’re never over eight-tenths, or whatever, because you’re thinking about a shunt, you’re not going as quick as you can. And if you’re not doing that, you’re not a racing driver. Some of the guys in Formula 1... well, to me, they’re not racing drivers. They drive racing cars, thats all. They’re doing half a job. And, in that case, I can’t figure why they do it at all.., Gilles presented this almost as a thesis, a straightforward and logical case. And as I came to know well over the years, he was like that in everything. The longer he was in Europe, around Formula l, the more confident and salty he became, but always his opinions were positive and reasoned, argued with passion. ’Everything in his life was done at 200 mph,’ says Patrick Tambay, perhaps his closest friend. ‘Everything! Skiing, driving the speedboat, playing backgammon... And his spending was the same, whether it was buying Christmas presents for his kids or playing blackjack at the casino. ”Gilles, you’re crazy!” I used to say to him, but that’s the way he was. ’Some evenings in the winter we all used to play Monopoly, and even in that he handled himself as if he was driving his Formula 1 car, very decisive, never hesitating, taking risks, going forward, forward, all the time. Once his mind was made up, he would go for it - as he did in his driving. There was panache in everything, but it wasn’t forced. That was him.’ The kind of man, in sum, who would do crosswords in ink. He also had a wonderful sense of humour, and could have you falling about with his impressions of certain Formula 1 people...
